Communications Director and Staff Director

Future of Life Organizations is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Communications Director and Staff Director.

In this dual role, you will be responsible for leading our communications efforts to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of AI safety and existential risk, as well as overseeing the effective functioning of our team and operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Communications Director:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies that align with organizational goals.
  • Manage media relations, including proactive outreach, press releases, and rapid response to media inquiries.
  • Craft compelling narratives and messaging to effectively communicate complex topics related to AI safety and existential risk to diverse audiences.
  • Oversee content creation across various platforms, including website, social media, reports, and presentations.
  • Lead crisis communications efforts, developing strategies and messaging to mitigate potential reputational risks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and brand voice.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage and public discourse to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Identify, develop, and mentor junior staff and interns on the Communications Team.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization as needed.

Staff Director:

  • Oversee the effective functioning of the FLI team (approx. 20-25 staff members) and operations, including HR, IT, and administrative functions.
  • Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Manage recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and offboarding processes.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Oversee IT infrastructure and support, ensuring the security and efficiency of our systems.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including office management, travel arrangements, and event planning.
  • Identify, develop, and mentor junior staff and interns on the Operations Team.
  • Provide operational support for the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful communications strategies.
  • Strong media relations skills and experience working with national and international media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear and concise messages.
  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team.
  • Strong understanding of AI safety and existential risk, or a demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex technical and policy issues.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, remote environment.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proficiency with communications tools and platforms (e.g., media monitoring software, content management systems, social media management tools).
  • Experience managing human resources, IT, and administrative functions.
  • Familiarity with relevant labor laws and regulations.
  • Experience with operational support for fundraising.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or research organization focused on global catastrophic risks.
  • Fluency in multiple languages.
  • Experience with government relations or public policy advocacy.
