As a Human Factors Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, usability, and efficiency of complex systems and environments, particularly within the transit and rail sectors. You will apply human factors principles to design, develop, and evaluate systems, products, and processes, considering human capabilities and limitations.

Your role:

  • Provide Human Factors Engineering (HFE) expertise to support infrastructure projects, particularly in transit and rail.
  • Support the integration of human factors into all project phases (concept, design, build, test, commissioning).
  • Conduct HFE analyses (e.g., Human Error Analysis, Task Analysis, Anthropometric Analysis, Workload Analysis, Staffing Assessments, FMECA, etc.).
  • Develop HFE documentation (e.g., HFE Management Plans, HFE Design Guidelines, HFE Requirements Specifications, HFE Verification & Validation Plans, HFE Test Plans, Usability Test Reports, HFE Audit Reports, etc.).
  • Support the planning and execution of HFE V&V activities.
  • Support project design teams and clients with HFE input.
  • Participate in relevant project design reviews.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for HFE improvement.
  • Perform reviews of documentation from sub-consultants and equipment suppliers.
  • Collaborate with other discipline engineers (systems, safety, mechanical, electrical, etc.) and project managers.
  • Manage project HFE activities, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Support project managers in identifying new opportunities and preparing proposals.
  • Participate in client-facing meetings and workshops.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide peer reviews.
  • Adhere to quality assurance standards and company procedures.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environment policies.

Your profile:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering Psychology, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in Human Factors Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with transit and rail projects is preferred.
  • Experience with Canadian projects/clients is an asset.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge of HFE principles, standards, and methodologies (e.g., ISO 9241, MIL-STD-1472, EN standards, TSI OPE, etc.).
  • Proficiency in HFE analytical techniques (e.g., Task Analysis, Human Error Analysis, Anthropometric Analysis, Workload Assessment, Usability Testing, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • French language skills are an asset.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for P.Eng. in Ontario is an asset.
  • Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) or eligibility for CPE is an asset.
