About the Role:

As a Director of Research Engineering, you’ll lead a team of talented Research Engineers focusing on building and maintaining the datasets that power our models.

You’ll play a crucial role in defining and executing our strategy for data collection, curation, and infrastructure, ensuring the availability of high-quality, diverse datasets essential for advancing our generative AI research and product development.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of Research Engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence in dataset engineering.
  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of large-scale, high-quality datasets essential for training and evaluating our generative models.
  • Establish best practices for data collection, annotation, curation, and validation, ensuring data integrity and ethical sourcing.
  • Collaborate closely with research scientists and product teams to understand their data needs and translate them into actionable engineering strategies.
  • Drive the adoption of cutting-edge tools and methodologies for data management, versioning, and processing.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and roadmap development for the Datasets team, aligning with company-wide objectives.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in dataset engineering, machine learning, and AI ethics, incorporating relevant insights into our practices.

What you’ll need:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in research engineering, data engineering, or a related role, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management position.
  • Strong background in machine learning and deep learning fundamentals, particularly with large-scale generative models.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with relevant data processing libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy) and ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and distributed data processing technologies (e.g., Spark).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement robust data pipelines and infrastructure for high-throughput, low-latency applications.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with a proven ability to mentor and develop engineers.
  • Experience with data annotation platforms and quality control processes.
  • A passion for building groundbreaking creative tools and contributing to the responsible development of AI.

The cash compensation for this role ranges from C$540,000 to C$661,500.
