The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Manager, Data Science (Product Analytics) to lead a team of data scientists and product analysts. This team is focused on product analytics, experimentation, and data storytelling for a variety of products, including Wikipedia and its sister projects. You will support your team’s growth and impact by providing strategic direction, coaching and mentorship, and fostering collaboration across the organization. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Data Science (Product Analytics).
About the Role
As a Manager, Data Science (Product Analytics), you will lead a team of talented data scientists and product analysts, fostering their professional growth and ensuring their success in generating actionable insights. You will be instrumental in shaping the data science strategy for product analytics, collaborating closely with product, engineering, and design teams. Your expertise will guide the team in designing experiments, analyzing user behavior, and communicating data-driven recommendations that enhance the user experience across all Wikimedia products.
Responsibilities
- Manage, coach, and develop a team of 4-6 data scientists and product analysts, focusing on their career growth and fostering a collaborative team environment.
- Lead the strategic planning and execution of data science initiatives for product analytics, ensuring alignment with overall product goals.
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and designers to identify key questions, define metrics, and design experiments to evaluate product features and user experiences.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of data pipelines, dashboards, and reporting tools to monitor product performance and user behavior.
- Guide the team in conducting in-depth analyses of user data, identifying trends, patterns, and insights that inform product decisions.
- Communicate complex analytical findings and recommendations clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including executive leadership.
- Stay abreast of industry best practices in data science, product analytics, and experimentation, integrating new techniques and technologies as appropriate.
- Champion data literacy and a data-driven culture across the organization.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience).
- 5+ years of experience in data science or product analytics, with a focus on product experimentation and user behavior analysis.
- 2+ years of experience managing and mentoring a team of data scientists or analysts.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python (or R) for data manipulation, analysis, and statistical modeling.
- Strong understanding of experimental design, causal inference, and statistical methods (e.g., A/B testing, regression analysis, time series analysis).
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Superset) and building compelling dashboards.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working with large datasets and distributed computing environments (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
- Strong collaboration and cross-functional leadership skills, with a track record of driving impact in a complex organizational setting.

- Experience with product analytics in a large-scale, consumer-facing product or platform.
- Familiarity with open-source technologies and contributions to open-source projects.
- Experience working in a non-profit or mission-driven organization.
