Deputy General Counsel – Litigation

About the Role

Mercury is seeking an experienced and strategic Deputy General Counsel to lead our litigation function. In this critical role, you will manage and oversee all litigation matters, disputes, investigations, and regulatory inquiries across various areas, including commercial, product, intellectual property, employment, and regulatory enforcement. You will be responsible for developing and executing litigation strategy, working closely with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to protect Mercury’s interests. This is an exciting opportunity to build and scale a litigation function within a fast-growing fintech company.

What you’ll do

  • Manage and resolve litigation matters, disputes, investigations, and regulatory inquiries, as well as pre-litigation demands and escalated customer complaints.
  • Drive the strategy and execution of all litigation, from discovery to trial.
  • Own internal and external legal strategy, working collaboratively with outside counsel to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Partner with product, operations, risk, and compliance teams to ensure litigation risk is mitigated at all stages of the product lifecycle.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders regarding potential disputes and litigation risks.
  • Develop and implement litigation prevention strategies and best practices.

What you’ll bring

  • 12+ years of litigation experience, with a focus on fintech, financial services, or technology.
  • Prior in-house experience at a high-growth company is a plus.
  • Experience managing a diverse litigation portfolio, including customer disputes, intellectual property, product liability, employment, and regulatory matters.
  • A track record of successfully managing complex and high-stakes litigation matters.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide pragmatic, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.

The Team

Mercury’s legal team is growing rapidly, and we are looking for a highly motivated and experienced attorney to join us. You will report directly to the General Counsel and work closely with all levels of the organization to support Mercury’s continued growth and innovation.
