Applied Scientist

KoBold Metals is a fast-growing exploration company, building a digital exploration pipeline from discovery to mine development to power the electric vehicle and clean energy revolution. We are looking for an Applied Scientist to join our team, contribute to the development of our AI-powered mineral exploration platform, and help accelerate discovery of the critical minerals needed for the clean energy transition.

We are a diverse team of geoscientists, software engineers, and machine learning scientists who are passionate about discovering the materials needed for the clean energy transition. We are backed by leading investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and operate projects globally.

As an Applied Scientist, you will play a crucial role in developing and deploying advanced machine learning models and algorithms to revolutionize mineral exploration. You will work closely with a team of experienced geoscientists and software engineers to design, implement, and integrate AI-powered solutions into our exploration platform.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of our mineral exploration platform.
  • Design, implement, and deploy machine learning models and algorithms to solve challenging problems in mineral exploration, such as target generation, resource modeling, and geophysical inversion.
  • Work closely with geologists, geophysicists, and engineers to understand their needs and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to integrate your models into the overall platform.
  • Conduct thorough testing and validation of your models, ensuring their accuracy, robustness, and scalability.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine learning, geosciences, and related fields, and propose innovative solutions to improve our exploration capabilities.
  • Communicate your findings and insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Geophysics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling.
  • Proficiency in Python and relevant machine learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark) is a plus.
  • Experience working with large-scale datasets and geospatial data.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for applying cutting-edge AI techniques to real-world problems in the geosciences.
  • Experience in the mining or geoscience industry is a plus.
