human factors engineer

Reporting to the Senior Engineer – Human Factors, the Human Factors Engineer will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a wide range of human factors engineering projects across a range of high hazard industries. The role would include the provision of human factors support for system design (e.g., control rooms, equipment, procedures), human reliability analysis and human factors integration during project delivery and commissioning.

Your purpose

  • Provide human factors technical support to project teams, including human factors integration, human reliability analysis, human factors risk assessment and safety critical task analysis, as well as control room and equipment design review;
  • Deliver human factors design input and integration into systems, ensuring that designs are human-centred, meet user needs and comply with relevant standards and legislation;
  • Perform human factors assessments to analyse and improve equipment and systems for operator use and maintenance;
  • Support the development of human factors management plans, strategies, and technical specifications for projects;
  • Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, and presentations;
  • Lead and support design reviews, hazard studies, and other safety-related assessments from a human factors perspective;
  • Engage with clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders to ensure effective communication and delivery of human factors requirements;
  • Support the bidding of new work, including input into cost estimates and writing of proposals.

What you will bring

  • A degree or post-graduate qualification in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Engineering Psychology or a related discipline;
  • Experience of working as a Human Factors Engineer, ideally in a high hazard industry (e.g., nuclear, oil and gas, rail, defence, aviation);
  • Knowledge of human factors methods and tools, including human reliability assessment, safety critical task analysis, control room design and assessment, procedure development, human factors integration plans;
  • Awareness of relevant human factors standards, guidelines and regulatory expectations;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex human factors issues to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
