Senior Data Scientist

About the Role

Khan Academy is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to identify and tackle our most impactful data problems through statistical analysis, experimentation, and machine learning. You’ll work closely with product and engineering teams, leveraging our rich dataset to drive critical insights and inform strategic decisions that impact millions of learners worldwide.

This is a remote position based in the USA or Canada.

What you’ll do

  • Drive major data science projects from inception to completion, working collaboratively with product, engineering, and other teams to understand goals and define success metrics.
  • Identify and implement novel, sophisticated statistical methods and machine learning models, leveraging our extensive dataset to uncover actionable insights.
  • Design and analyze experiments (A/B tests) to evaluate the impact of new features and product changes, ensuring rigor and interpretability of results.
  • Communicate complex findings and recommendations clearly and persuasively to technical and non-technical stakeholders, influencing product strategy and decisions.
  • Champion best practices in data science, including data quality, reproducibility, and ethical considerations.
  • Mentor junior data scientists and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team.

What you’ll need

  • 5+ years of experience in data science, with a proven track record of delivering impactful projects.
  • Expertise in statistical modeling, causal inference, and machine learning techniques, with a strong understanding of their underlying mathematical principles.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python (or R) for data manipulation, analysis, and modeling.
  • Experience with A/B testing design, implementation, and analysis.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex data insights into clear, actionable recommendations for diverse audiences.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics) or equivalent practical experience.

We are a remote first organization for most roles. We have the flexibility to allow people to work from home, or from one of our small in-person hubs in Mountain View, CA or New York City, NY if that is preferred (once we deem it safe to reopen them).

The Hiring Process

For this role, you can expect the hiring process to follow this general structure:

Stage 1: Phone Screen – You’ll chat with a member of our recruiting team to tell us about your experience and learn more about Khan Academy. (30 minutes)

Stage 2: Hiring Manager Interview – You’ll chat with the hiring manager for the role to learn more about the team and what the role entails. (45 minutes)

Stage 3: Peer Interviews – You’ll chat with a few members of the team. (2 x 45 minutes)

Stage 4: Technical Interview – You’ll complete a ~60 minute technical exercise and review your solution with a data scientist. (90 minutes)

Stage 5: VP Interview – You’ll chat with our VP of Product to discuss your experience and interest in the role. (45 minutes)

Stage 6: Final Conversation – You’ll have a final conversation with a member of our leadership team to talk about Khan Academy and what excites you about the role. (45 minutes)
