Senior Director – Bus Programs

CALSTART is a national non-profit organization that works with businesses and governments to develop clean, efficient transportation solutions. We are a fast-paced, growing organization and a recognized leader in the transportation technology field. We lead a consortium of over 300 member companies and agencies with offices in New York, Michigan, Colorado, and California. CALSTART is seeking to hire an exceptional candidate to serve as Senior Director of Bus Programs, leading our work on electrifying the nation’s bus fleets.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and expansion of programs designed to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission bus technologies across North America.
  • Manage a dynamic team of program managers, engineers, and policy specialists.
  • Oversee program budgets, ensuring financial sustainability and effective resource allocation.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including transit agencies, vehicle manufacturers, utility companies, government bodies, and industry partners.
  • Represent CALSTART at industry events, conferences, and policy forums, serving as a thought leader and advocate for zero-emission bus initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities, including grant proposals and strategic partnerships, to support program growth and innovation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on policy development, market analysis, and communications strategies related to bus electrification.
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical expertise to transit agencies and other stakeholders on zero-emission bus deployment, infrastructure planning, and operational best practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate program performance, utilizing data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic planning and mission of CALSTART, particularly concerning heavy-duty vehicle electrification.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the transportation sector, with a significant focus on public transit, heavy-duty vehicles, or advanced transportation technologies.
  • Proven track record of success in program leadership and management, including experience with large-scale projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong understanding of zero-emission bus technologies, infrastructure requirements, and regulatory landscapes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and technical experts.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical and policy concepts to various audiences.
  • Experience in business development, grant writing, and securing funding for large-scale projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, public policy, business administration, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to travel frequently (up to 30%) for meetings, conferences, and site visits.

  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
