The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Talent & Culture (T&C) Technology team. This team is at the forefront of designing, implementing, and maintaining technical solutions that enhance the employee experience for Wikimedia Foundation staff. The Staff Software Engineer will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction and ensuring the successful delivery of critical systems.

What you’ll do
- Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of complex software systems, ensuring high performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Architect and implement technical solutions that enhance the employee experience for Wikimedia Foundation staff, focusing on areas such as HRIS integration, internal tools, and data analytics platforms.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, HR stakeholders, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications and deliver innovative solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Conduct code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to best practices in software development.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, performing root cause analysis and implementing preventative measures.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of our software development processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and approaches to improve our systems and workflows.
Skills and experience you’ll bring
- 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a strong background in developing and maintaining complex web applications or enterprise systems.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, PHP, JavaScript, or Go, with a deep understanding of object-oriented design principles and data structures.
- Extensive experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB).
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing scalable, high-performance APIs and microservices.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and agile methodologies.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- A passion for open-source software and a commitment to the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

- Experience with HRIS systems (e.g., Workday, BambooHR) and their integration.
- Familiarity with data privacy and security best practices.
- Experience working in a remote-first, globally distributed team environment.

U.S. Remote Base Salary Ranges
The Foundation has a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy and annually reviews salaries and aggregates market data to ensure that compensation is competitive and equitable. New hires are typically paid at the mid-point of the range, and salary offers are determined based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and the location where the employee will live and work.

- USA, New York, New York City: $173,736 – $269,308
- USA, Washington, D.C.: $173,736 – $269,308
- USA, All other states: $164,692 – $255,340
- Canada, Toronto: $138,409 – $214,489 (CAD)
- United Kingdom, London: £108,186 – £167,736
- Germany, Berlin: €99,579 – €154,394
- Netherlands, Amsterdam: €99,579 – €154,394
- Spain, Madrid: €80,306 – €124,472
